The annual meeting of the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) Working Group of the steel industry was held in Shanghai from January 15th to 16th, 2026. The meeting focused on deepening the application of LCA in the industry and promoting the large-scale development of low-carbon steel. Nearly 300 representatives from government, industry organizations, enterprises and research institutions engaged in in-depth discussions.

Jiang Wei, Deputy Party Committee Secretary, Vice President, and Secretary-General of the China Iron and Steel Industry Association, pointed out that China's steel industry has made substantial progress in its low-carbon transformation: the target for ultra-low emission upgrades was exceeded, a roadmap for carbon peak in the sector was released, the China Steel EPD platform was officially launched, and standards for evaluating low-carbon emissions in steel gradually established. He suggested that future efforts should focus on deepening methodological research, enhancing industrial chain collaboration, actively participating in international standard mutual recognition, and jointly promoting the green transformation of the steel industry through life cycle assessment (LCA) as a connecting link.

At the meeting, the China Iron and Steel Association signed a memorandum of understanding on interoperability cooperation with the global organization Responsible Steel, marking the move towards mutual recognition of the two low-carbon standard systems and providing an important framework for building a global low-carbon steel trading system.
During the centralized release of low-carbon emission steel products, five enterprises including Shagang and Wugang released a total of 11 low-carbon products, and multiple steel companies simultaneously launched a new batch of evaluation work. The conference also released the "Deepening Collaborative Carbon Reduction Cooperation Statement between the Steel and Automotive Industries" jointly initiated by steel, automotive, and research institutions, promoting collaborative carbon reduction across the industry chain.
In addition, experts from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment interpreted the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and representatives at the meeting exchanged views on hot topics such as carbon footprint database construction and LCA methodology. This conference is hosted by the China Iron and Steel Association and organized by China Baowu and Ouye Yunshang, aiming to consolidate industry consensus and accelerate the green, low-carbon and high-quality development of the steel industry.
